Camping Spots to Go Completely Off the Grid in Queensland

Camping is all about being totally at peace in the great outdoors, right? So sometimes us campers need to feel a little more secluded than your contemporary camping ground might allow. There’s a tonne of clubs, cabins and sometimes even built-in water features at sites these days, which are all great for some but aren’t exactly what you picture when you think of good old Mother Nature. In order to really get that secluded, totally separate from the real-world feeling, you occasionally have to stray outside of the traditional lines. Camping off the grid is completely calming and freeing, and it’s very easy to do once you’re informed on the best and safest spots to hit up. Queensland is rife with amazing locations, here are just some you should haul yourself to on your next outdoors adventure…

Simpson Desert, Munga-Thirri National Park…

Munga-Thirri National Park is for those who are looking for some serious seclusion. You have to be diligent when travelling in the Simpson Desert, bring plenty of fuel, water, maps and always tell your buddies back home where you’re going. Once you hit your destination, you’ll experience complete quiet and just what makes this country so great.

Tropical North Queensland, Lizard Island…

Lizard Island is known for its luxury and glamour, but camping is actually significantly quiet and removed. This is a tropical camper’s paradise! With a bright blue ocean just waiting to be explored, white sandy beaches and staggering views across Watsons Bay, there’s not much more you can ask for!

Far South-West Queensland, Diamantina National Park…

Looking for a dusty, desert getaway that’s going to take your breath away? Diamantina is the place for you! This park has a lot to offer, it’s very vast and it’s usually very still. Canoe, bird watch and learn about Native communities all in the one spot. This has access for lightweight camper trailers and off-roading models, so pack up the camper and get ready for an awesome trip.

South Queensland Border, Sundown National Park…

Sundown National Park straddles New South Wales and Queensland. This location is majorly green and leafy, enveloping campers in a gorgeous, quiet canopy that will make you feel a world away from your day to day life. The border is mountainous, ideal if you want to work on your fitness whilst you’re exploring the parks.

South Mollie Island…

This one is ideal for a tropical getaway that is truly stripped back and removed. This spot is located close to a bustling tourist location, but you absolutely would not know it! You’ll be camping entirely in nature, overlooking the stunning scenery that so many people flock to – only, without the flock anywhere near you! The island is studded with amazing walking tracks and bush trails, so South Mollie is fantastic for the active adventurer. Head to Paddle Bay to chill out right on the coast and dip in the sparkling clean waters to spy some incredible sea life!

Cape York, Jardine River…

If you’re driving to the Jardine River, make sure you plan your trip in the dry months – accessing during the wet season is far more difficult. This location is perfect if you’re a fan of swimming in tranquil waterfalls, basking in varied and colourful nature and shading in the heat. Cape York is really removed and a bit of a stretch to get to, but once you experience this stunning spot, you’ll struggle to beat it!

Ready to drop off the grid? Any one of these locations is going to bring you back to your roots.
